In the constantly evolving world of marketing and personal branding, there are people who have had a significant impact on the development of this industry. One of them is Kateryna Kozlova, a marketing expert and personal branding mentor. In this article, we will look at her journey from collaborating with major players in the field to creating her own successful personal brand.
Tell us a bit about your background. How did you decide to step out of your comfort zone and start a blog?
Hello, my name is Kate Kozlova. I am a marketer, entrepreneur, and personal branding mentor. In response to your question, I want to say that for me, a blog is within my comfort zone. A blog is an opportunity for me to realize myself.
A blog is a chance to shine, share knowledge, and teach. It's a great opportunity to fulfill my mission in a place that is personally comfortable for me, where there are no limits whatsoever. You enter there, and the whole space is yours.
I have worked for 8 years in an advertising marketing agency, developing brands for others. At one point, I realized that I should try to start something of my own. My blog became a platform that combined what I did offline for others and what I did offline within the framework of my own brand, even in the studio, because I have a concept of bringing together talented, interesting, successful people.
In your opinion, why is personal branding so important in the modern world? Why is everyone paying so much attention to personal branding now?
In the times of classical marketing, when I worked in an agency, we always divided clients into two segments - B2B and B2C.
And we almost always worked with such companies. But then there was a trend that emerged, and in 2018, 2019, the heads of every company began to be either the founders of the companies or ambassadors of the companies. Clients started choosing companies that had a “face”, whereas 2-3 years before that, these “faces” were logos that we traditionally created for various companies. Then people began to trust more and more and choose the company with a specific person. And the trend moved towards where there are people. And the power of personal branding is the only asset that you can always take wherever you go. I took the Instagram niche, and I don't have anything on Facebook or LinkedIn now. Instagram helped me in my case.
That's why I bet on personal branding because even before that, I developed courses like "How to create a brand?" Then, when I started receiving requests from my followers through potential clients, they all wrote to me: "Katya, can you consult me on my brand?" And I realized that my help is valuable at the moment. My task is to show people that they can enjoy their lives by transferring their classical knowledge that we used before while going to the office or using someone's services.
We can do this through live broadcasts, through Instagram. The power is that you once understood that you are the most important asset for yourself. You can start investing in it from all sides. And not just financially. First and foremost, tell yourself that you have such knowledge, you can help others with it, that you have something that solves your client's pain points. And only then start moving in the format of personal branding. By the way, this can also be done initially on a non-paid basis. In the beginning, it was maximum organic promotion for me. Through people who know me, through networking, joint broadcasts, mutual PR, even working on some barter basis when you help each other, and then you talk about each other in positive terms. And then, when you see the results, you can already invest in advertising, collaborations, and other tools that will help you further develop your personal brand.
But the main thing is to remember that personal branding is not just about creating an image or becoming popular on social media. It's about building trust, credibility, and a strong reputation. It's about showing your expertise, values, and unique qualities that set you apart from others. In today's world, where competition is high and attention spans are short, personal branding allows you to stand out and make a meaningful connection with your audience.
So, if you want to succeed in the modern world, it's essential to pay attention to your personal brand. Invest in yourself, showcase your expertise, and build a strong online presence that reflects who you are and what you can offer. Personal branding is a powerful tool that can open doors, attract opportunities, and help you achieve your goals.
How did you choose the theme that defined your personal brand? Tell us a bit about your experience in this.
The market started dictating it to me. In a cool sense of the word, because when the full-scale invasion began, I realized that I needed to activate the course I wanted to launch a brand on my own.
I started talking about it on Instagram, people began giving feedback, and the feedback they started giving was that Katya would help me here and now. What I can do with my blog, what I can start selling here, and in order to sell in a blog, it's not enough to have a personal blog, because a personal blog is not equal to a professional, expert blog. And when I started hearing this from my followers, I started thinking for myself that if you want to help people develop their personal brand now, you need to start developing your own personal brand. And then, I remember, I hired someone who helped me create visual content because it's also important; if you want people to come to you, they should enjoy it. Everything should be well-designed, everything should be clear, what you can help with should be evident. And of course, when followers see what you have written in your profile header, they can determine your expertise in 3-5 seconds.
At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, my personal project formed; at that time, I only made social projects. I had, I think, 20 live broadcasts with Ukrainians who had moved to other cities in Ukraine. I helped people move, so I organized broadcasts where we talked about temporary protection, privileges, social assistance, and then my personal brand expanded as someone who helps with relocation. Many people joined my blog on this topic.
And when this spread, a lot of people came. Then I started building the theme for this audience, that I am a marketer and I can help with what I excel in. I also want to add that regardless of who you are professionally, in most cases, you can transfer your activity to Instagram. Because if you have knowledge, if you want to share this knowledge, then you have a chance to start building your brand in your niche simply by bringing values to people, and then people will associate this service specifically with you.
What advices would you give to beginners who have just started their journey in building their own brand?
First and foremost, pursue a path with your heart. I will emphasize this constantly. Understand yourself, figure out what you really want.
Secondly – «watchfulness». You can independently analyze selected accounts, get inspired, and understand which direction you want to move in.
And third, define for yourself what you can offer to your audience, what you are interested in, what you are an expert in. Later, it's important to find your target audience.
Of course, there will be people who will say that nothing will come out of it, but if you remember why you are doing it, if you put your sense into what you do, then everything will definitely succeed.
