# The new Steam Machine update is finally here (but is it worth the hype?)

Valve just dropped the piece of hardware everyone has been theorizing about for years.

Hardware-wise, it basically has the guts of a decent mid-range gaming PC. We are looking at a custom AMD setup: a 6-core Zen 4 CPU paired with an RDNA 3 graphics chip and 16 GB of DDR5 RAM.

Valve claims the overall performance is around six times faster than the Steam Deck. It comes in 512 GB and 2 TB options, and the best part? Both the RAM and SSD are user-upgradeable — try doing that on a PS5. The GPU, however, is soldered to the board, so don't expect to swap it out.

But the actual gaming performance is where things get complicated.

### Does it actually run games well?

The technical team over at Digital Foundry ran the benchmarks, and the real-world results are a bit mixed.

The graphics power lands somewhere between an AMD RX 6600 and an RX 7600. In reality, that puts it roughly on par with a base PS5, and sometimes slightly behind. For instance, playing Black Myth: Wukong, the PS5 runs a tiny bit faster. In heavy scenes, Sony’s console takes the lead by about 17%.

The biggest bottleneck is the 8 GB of video memory. If you try running Hogwarts Legacy on Ultra settings at 4K, the Steam Machine completely hits a wall, dropping to an unplayable 2 frames per second unless you turn on Valve’s FSR upscaling tech. Anyone trying to push this box to its absolute limits will run into a ceiling pretty quickly.

Where this machine actually shines is in CPU-heavy games, multitasking, and flexibility. Plus, it supports FSR 4, which might help close the performance gap in future titles.

### Let’s talk about the price tag

This is where the conversation gets incredibly tough.

The base Steam Machine costs $1,049, and that doesn't even include a controller. If you want the 2 TB model bundled with the new Steam Controller, you're looking at $1,428.

For context, a PS5 Pro with 2 TB of storage and a controller sits at $899. A base PS5 is $599.

Valve originally wanted to sell this for around $750. But the massive AI boom completely broke the memory market, driving DDR5 component costs up three to five times. Valve openly admitted this, but they shipped the product anyway at a price point that is incredibly hard to justify.

Paying way over a grand for something that performs similarly to a standard console is a tough pill to swallow.

### Who is this box actually for?

Let’s be real: this is not for console gamers. It cannot compete with Sony on price, and you won’t get any PlayStation exclusives here.

This is purely for dedicated PC players. If you have spent a decade building a massive Steam library and want a clean way to play those games on your TV without running long cables across your apartment, this is the most polished way to do it. It’s also for people who love the freedom to tweak settings, install other operating systems, and upgrade their hardware down the line.

It’s a niche crowd, but it definitely exists.

We are officially moving into an era where hardware pricing is dictated by the AI boom, and unfortunately, regular gamers are the ones paying the price. Valve’s ecosystem is incredibly polished, and the hardware design is great, but $1,049 for PS5-level graphics performance makes zero sense for most people right now. Unless you are deeply embedded in the Steam ecosystem and have cash to burn, it’s best to watch this first generation from the sidelines and see if prices chill out for round two.
